The International Women's Day, March 8, colorfully observed in the UK

The National Union of Eritrean Women in the UK, celebrated International Women’s day in London, on Saturday 8th March.

The event was a big success for the Union and was attend by around 800 guests.

The event was open with the Chairwomen’s speech, Mrs Juma Omar, which highlighted the achievements of the Eritrean women. Mrs Omar said that 2007 has been the year of high achievement for the Eritrean women, in terms of the women’s contribution in social, and economical development of the Country.

In light of the educational development, the Union is pushing for women’s education, and the improvement of women’s life.

They are also fighting under age marriage, which is what the ministry of education aims to achieve all around the country.

The Union has been, and is, working in implementing women’s rights, and 2007 was the year when female cercumsion became illegal in Eritrea.

Guest speaker from the Women of Africa association, Ms Alice Akolu, Echoed the need to stop female cercumsion all over Africa and praised the Eritrean women for their courage and achievement.

The Eritrean ambassador to the UK, Mr. Tesfamicael Gerahtu, thanked the Union for its effort and hard work, and called for the need of young women to join the Union and following the footsteps of their mothers.

Notably, a high number of young women, who have also shown an interest in taking part and moving the union forward, attended the event.

The entertainment of the evening was by Wedi Hantal, Solomon and the Eritrean star Ms Helen Mels.

The National Union of Eritrean Women in the UK carries out projects to address the needs of Eritrean women in different part of UK The chapter also carries out projects concerning children and youth.

The National Union of Eritrean Women in the UK is also carrying out a major project in Eritrea. The chapter is building a Training Centre for Women in Mendefera, Eritrea, the centre will enhance NUEW literacy programs, as well as provide women with more opportunities for vocational Training.
