Meadna, Lela, interview with young Eritrean, Dessi Berhane, who works as a Solicitor for a leading Law firm in London.

Name
Dessi Berhane

Job title
Corporate and Commercial Solicitor

Education
Law at University of Sheffield

How did you become interested in Law?
It was a focused and challenging degree with good career prospects.

How did you get the job?
After completing my degree, I did the Legal Practice Course and then, whilst working on a voluntary basis at a local high street firm, I applied for training contracts. I secured a contract with my firm and qualified into Corporate and Commercial Law.

Did you come across any difficulties?
None that could not be overcome with hard work. On hindsight, I wish I had focused on learning a second language- this would have given me an added advantage in my career but it is never too late.

Any advice to those young Eritreans who are studying in schools, colleges and Universities?
Dream big and work hard. Nothing is beyond you but you need to reach beyond yourself.
In terms of entering the law, get work experience as early on as possible (through local law centres, volunteering at high street firms etc) and do something to make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd, whether it's extra languages, business experience, sporting excellence or whatever else.

Your mentors and heroes?
My mother

Your hobbies?
Scuba diving and generally any water sports.
